OPIA Romania supports the Centre of Excellence in Research, Development and Innovation, a new ROMARM organization

Nowadays it is necessary to adapt the defense industry to the challenges and especially to improve military equipment or technologies. In Romania, these actions have been pursued in recent years by CN ROMARM SA and its subsidiaries, and the variety of projects managed has generated the creation of a dedicated unit, which was established in October 2022.

The new ROMARM subsidiary, “Centre of Excellence in Research, Development and Innovation” Bucharest (CERDI) will perform research projects in the field of defense industry, according to CAEN code 2540 – Manufacture of armaments and ammunition.

CERDI’s main activity is interdisciplinary research-development-innovation, technology transfer in the field of military technology in the defence industry or in other related fields. At present, research projects and programmes are carried out and developed, expertise is provided in the field of military technology, with the aim of improving munitions and thus economic development.
Research within the CERDI subscribes to the following strategic functional priorities, which define the main activities of the Centre by work streams, as follows:

  • research and development through scientific research, innovation and experimental development activities;
  • basic research and applied research on a contract or project basis;
  • research commissioned by third parties (for economic operators or other interested entities, individually or in partnership);
  • other activities for the dissemination of scientific research results.

The Centre of Excellence in Research, Development and Innovation undertakes high-performance military research projects

Previous to the creation of the Centre, ROMARM specialists conducted and completed several research projects, such as dedicated armour-piercing tracer projectiles for naval installations, thermobaric armour-piercing strikes for the AG-9 grenade launcher, or thermal countermeasure munitions for aircraft. All of these projects were completed in 2022 and have already been approved for commercialization at national, European and international level.

CERDI is currently working on several other technically challenging projects due for completion in 2024, such as:

  • low environmental impact composite fuel for unmanned propulsion systems;
  • low-toxicity irritant-lacrymatory ammunition to combat public disorder;
  • EFP/TB tandem reactive strike for portable launchers.

According to the press release published by CN ROMARM SA, OPIA Romania member all military products produced by CERDI Bucharest respond to a market demand. Therefore, the performance of CERDI specialists and the innovation of the products are of real benefit to the local defense industry and to the Romanian Army.
